Ocean Freight refers to the shipping of goods via sea using large shipping containers. Ocean freight is the most commonly used transportation method used by exporter and importers. Although it’s not as fast as courier or air freight, ocean and sea freight are less expensive and more flexible with volume. MELLOHAWK recommends our customers ocean and sea freight services when shipping large and heavy quantities to minimize costs. Ocean and sea freight also have fewer restrictions and regulations compared to air freight.

Ocean and sea shipping allows MELLOHAWK to deliver large quantities of cargo beyond contiguous lands. Ocean and sea shipping are also very reliable as there are fewer weather turbulences that can delay departure.

Types of ocean freight transportation services

There are 2 main types of Ocean Freight options:

FCL – Full Container Load services:

This refers to full container load services when the entire container belongs to a single shipper / client. Cargo is loaded directly from a shipper location to its final customer at destination.

LCL – Less Than a Container Load services:

This refers to less than a container load. When shippers don’t have enough cargo to fill an entire container, they can pay per CBM of loaded cargo on a share container. The shipper pays only for the space the product occupies in the container.

Breakbulk Services:

In shipping, breakbulk cargo or general cargo are goods that must be stowed individually and will be listed on multiple bill of ladings each covering a different commodity. This is in contrast to goods stowed in intermodal containers, or in bulk as with oil or grain.

MELLOHAWK can drop off an empty container at our client’s location allowing them to load the container Clients are responsible for packing as well as loading containers as soon as possible to avoid extra charges.
MELLOHAWK also helps its clients with overseas shipments by helping them with creating loading plans for their product.

Container Shipping Guide

Most container shipments are commercial goods and as per the ISO standards, the most popular container sizes are as follows:

20 foot: 20’ long x 8’ wide x 8 ½’ high external (c. 6.1m x 2.4m x 2.6m)
40 foot: 40’ long x 8’ wide x 8 ½’ high external (c. 12.2m x 2.4m x 2.6m)

The maximum payload mass for a 20’ container is approx. 22 tonnes: and for 40’, approx. 27 tonnes.
